March 14, 2022 – Iqaluit, Nunavut – With financial support from Kakivak Association and the Makigiaqta Inuit Training Corporation, NCC Development Limited will deliver a trades training program and provide job placements for up to 60 Inuit trainees in the communities of Clyde River, Pond Inlet, Arctic Bay, Resolute Bay and Grise Fiord. NCC Development Limited will be supported by partners, included the Qikiqtaaluk Business Development Corporation and Qikiqtani Industry Ltd.
Job placements will be provided through the construction of community infrastructure projects funded by Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) through the Tallurutiup Imanga National Marine Conservation Area and Tuvaijuittuq infrastructure agreements. The delivery of the 10 weeks of both classroom learning and hands-on training will be timed to allow for a transition to job placement.
“The High Arctic Trades Training Program is a great example of different organizations coming together for the common purpose of Inuit Training. The more we support our communities in their skills and trades, the brighter all of our futures will be,” said Olayuk Akesuk, President of QIA.
Kakivak Association will make an investment of just over $3.1 million over three years commencing in the fiscal year 2022-23. These funds are made available through Kakivak’s agreement with Employment and Social Development Canada for delivery of the Indigenous Skills and Employment Training Strategy.
“We are very happy to support this exciting opportunity for trades training and employment in the High Arctic communities. This is an amazing opportunity that will provide lasting benefits for training participants and the communities,” said Jeremy Tunraluk, Chair of the Kakivak Association Board of Directors.
In addition, Makigiaqta Inuit Training Corporation is contributing $1.68 million.
”We are excited to support the High Arctic Trades Training Program, which advances two of Makigiaqta’s strategic priorities: foundational skills development opportunities for adults, and advancing training and post-secondary opportunities linked with employment. The legacy of this project will be new community infrastructure built by Inuit while they learn and advance their careers,” said Aluki Kotierk, Chair of the Makigiaqta Inuit Training Corporation.
“NCC Development Limited is very excited to partner on this exciting initiative. The delivery of training at the community level is the first step in creating long term, meaningful and sustainable employment in the communities. It is important to us to be committed to building people, not just buildings,” said Clarence Synard, President and CEO NCC Investment Group Inc.
