Food Sovereignty Advocacy

Creating a food system with Qikiqtani Inuit, for Qikiqtani Inuit

Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) and Qikiqtaaluk Corporation (QC) and Group of Companies are collaboratively campaigning for food sovereignty across the Qikiqtani Region. We want to empower Inuit to feed our communities. By bringing together hunters, harvesters, growers, Elders, youth, businesses, and consumers, we aim to develop a regional food system that supports Inuit to access the food they want. A revitalized food system in Nunavut will enable Inuit to harvest through ecologically sound and sustainable methods, while giving access to country food in ways that empowers our communities and stimulates local economies.

Food Sovereignty: as defined by Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. and QIA, Inuit food sovereignty means:

  • The right to healthy and nutritious food
  • The right to culturally appropriate food
  • The right to food harvested through sustainable methods
  • The right to access wildlife in ways that empower communities and stimulates local economies.

QBDC has created several documents to support food sovereignty advocacy in the Qikiqtani Region:
